Farmhouse surroundings: Maremma coutryside in Tuscany

 Our farmhouse is nestled in the charming and varied landscape of Tuscany.

Left untouched for centuries, the Maremma natural park stretches across 130 km of coastline, an endless series of bays, coastal marshes, forests and Mediterranean scrubs, alternating between beaches, pine forests, stretches of striking cliffs and coves that are home to the harbours of Talamone Port, Santo Stefano Port, Ercole Port, Cala Galera, Marina di Grosseto, Punta Ala, Castiglione della Pescaia, and also the ports of the islands of Giglio and Giannutris. These locations, as well as Follonica and Principina Mare offer good quality accommodation resorts in an area that has managed to fully preserve its natural beauty.

The many protected areas, including the Maremma Natural Park , Orbetello lagoon, Burano Lake, Accesa lake and the Diaccia Botrona moorland, are  a real paradise for nature lovers.

On the many guided walks in the countryside, it is not uncommon to come across wild animals such as deer, badgers, foxes and wild bears, making the whole experience even more enjoyable and unforgettable.

You will also come across our very own Tuscan cowboys, the ‘butteri,’ riding a ‘Maremmano’ the horse typically found in the Maremma region. The butteri are still present in the memory of older Tuscans and in folk celebrations.

The Maremma  has a rich artistic and cultural heritage thanks to a rather wide historical period; just north of Grosseto, the Etruscan towns of Roselle and Vetulonia are  characterized by well preserved city walls and offer numerous archaeological sites and Etruscan necropolis (cemeteries)featuring great examples of monumental tombs. The ruins found in Etruscan tombs throughout the territory, are preserved in the archeological museums of Grosseto, Massa Marittima and Vetulonia and in the archeological areas of Sovana, Roselle and Vetulonia.

Finally, the ancient towns of Cosa and Roselle which date back to the Roman period are also well worth a visit.
