Grosseto
Grosseto, located in the extreme south of Tuscany is the capital city of Maremma, linked with railway lines and roads and has important agricultural centres.

Grosseto was the last city to pass from Siena dominion to the Medics who begun defensive works that remain to date. It was reclaimed from marshy areas then recaptured and came under Lorena in the second half of the 8th century.

The tour to this city starts from the pathways along the walls that have now become green public grounds. Six bastions enclose the ancient city; one of them is called Fortezza Medicea whose value has been increased by recent restoration works. The most important church in Grosseta is the Duomo whose white and pink polychrome façade owes to a 9th century reconstruction. The inside of this church also has present interventions.

The church of San Francesco enclosed within the walls, is from the 13th century and formed part of a convent owned by the Benedettini but now only a cloister of this remains. The jewel that belongs to the church is crucifix on the table painted Duccio di Buoninsegna.

One of the most important collections of Etruscan finds are in the archaeological and art museums of Maremma in addition to a collection of sacred art of the Grossetan diocese.
